Specifying a Transmitter for Oil and Gas Duty

Oil and gas service combines the harshest elements of industrial measurement: classified areas, high pressure, high temperature, aggressive media and outdoor exposure. Work through these decisions with your supplier before ordering — the cost of getting them wrong is measured in downtime and compliance risk, not just replacement sensors.

Hazardous area, pressure and temperature

  • Area classification — if the transmitter mounts in a classified area, the zone, gas group and temperature class come from the site's area classification drawing. Confirm the certificate requirements with the site engineer and we will match a suitable explosion-proof model.
  • Range and overpressure — standard ranges cover vacuum (-1 bar) to 600 bar. Place normal working pressure in the middle third of the range, and check the overpressure rating against your worst-case transient — surge and pigging events can far exceed steady-state line pressure.
  • Temperature — standard models handle media temperatures from -40°C to +125°C. For hotter duties, share the continuous temperature and the peak with its duration so the build can be confirmed rather than assumed.
  • Media and sour service — 316L stainless wetted parts cover sweet service. Where hydrogen sulphide is present, wetted materials should be reviewed against NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 requirements — confirm the material specification with your supplier.

Signal, connection and documentation

  • Output — 4-20mA two-wire for PLC/SCADA and long cable runs; RS485 Modbus for multi-drop digital buses; 0-10V for local controllers. On 4-20mA loops, a reading outside the 4-20mA window also doubles as a wiring-fault indicator on most PLCs.
  • Connection — G1/2 and 1/2" NPT are common on process and wellsite equipment, with M20×1.5 on European-built skids. Seal type matters as much as the thread — share the port drawing so the installed zero is right first time.
  • Enclosure and ingress — outdoor wellsite and tank farm exposure calls for IP65/IP67 housings and sealed connectors. Flush diaphragm variants suit viscous or solids-bearing media where a cavity would block.
  • Documentation — API-specified projects usually name the documents they need: calibration certificates, material certificates and test reports. Confirm the required documentation before ordering so the paperwork matches the deliverable.

Material failure in sour service

Elastomers and wetted metals that perform in sweet service can fail quickly where hydrogen sulphide is present. Confirm wetted materials against NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 requirements before ordering.

Ingress and vibration damage outdoors

Wellsite and tank farm transmitters live with rain, dust and vibration. IP65/IP67 housings, sealed connectors and protected cable routing make the difference between a sensor that lasts and one that fails at the worst moment.
